Review: Paxful VS. Local Bitcoins

Today when it comes to buying Bitcoins you usually go to a Bitcoin broker (e.g. Coinbase and Coinmama) or a Bitcoin trading platform (e.g. Bitstamp and Kraken). However some of these exchanges just don’t cut it – either due to their accepted payment methods or their geo restrictions (for example Coinabse doesn’t accept people from many countries around the world).
In this case you can always use something that can be best described as “the eBay of buying Bitcoin”. Networks of Bitcoin sellers from around the world that allow almost anyone to buy Bitcoins. Today there are two platforms that supply this kind of service – Paxful and Local Bitcoins. I’ve reviewed Local Bitcoins in the past and today I want to take the opportunity and review Paxful as well.
In its core, Paxful is very similar to Local Bitcoins. You choose the amount of Bitcoins you want to buy and your payment method, and then you are presented with available sellers. Each seller has a reputation from past trades and each specifies their Bitcoin exchange rate.
The exchange rate is much higher than what you’ll find at regulated trading platforms like Bitstamp and that’s due to the fact that sellers are taking a much bigger risk when selling Bitcoin to strangers. Since Bitcoin transactions are irreversible, if someone pays the seller and then denies he ever conducted the transaction, the seller may end up with no Bitcoins and no payment.
Also, some sellers allow you to buy Bitcoins with less traditional payment methods (e.g. Amazon gift cards, Skype voucher codes), so they tend to charge more for those.
Finally the seller will also display any specific details he deems relevant for the transaction. You will be able to see if the seller is currently online as well so you can both chat about the transaction once it’s underway.
Paxful seller example

Buying Bitcoins with Paxful

The process is pretty simple.
  1. Choose the amount of Bitcoins you want to buy
  2. Choose the currency you want the exchange rate to be in
  3. Select a payment method (there are dozens)
Then you get the chance to either search through the complete list of sellers or just get shown the best sellers possible based on Paxful’s criteria.
Once you choose a vendor and click “trade”  You will be redirected to the trade page and you can chat directly with the seller via the live chat. Once they answer you then follow their instructions to pay, click mark as paid and wait for them to release the bitcoins directly to your Paxful wallet.
Most trades are instant, but it depends on the payment method and if the seller is online. Paypal and gift cards for example are instant. Bank and CO-OP credit union cash deposits, Western Union, Moneygram take some time as you must leave your home to their branch and deposit cash. Usually they happen in under 1 hour.
When a trade starts, seller bitcoins are transferred automatically to Paxful’s secure escrow and at this point the seller can’t cancel the trade. Only a buyer can cancel a trade at any moment and the bitcoins will be transferred from the escrow back to the seller’s wallet. If the buyer hasn’t delivered the payment and didn’t mark payment as complete within the payment window time frame, a trade will be auto-cancelled and the bitcoins will be moved back to seller’s wallet.

Zero transaction fees

The supposedly cool thing about Paxful is that it doesn’t take any fees from you as the buyer. The site only takes 1% from the total sale amount from the seller. However saying that there are no transaction fees is a bit naive since most sellers just portray these fees inside their exchange rate. This is very similar to what Local Bitcoins offer.

Use caution with Paxful

From reading online reviews about Paxful it’s obvious that some people mistake the platform’s integrity for the seller’s integrity. Meaning, if a seller scammed them or was not trustworthy they assume the platform isn’t legit as well.
That’s why I wanted to point out some resources that may help you solve any issues when buying Bitcoins through Paxful.
  • There’s an active support forum on Paxful were you can ask any question you like regarding the platform.
  • Make sure that the user that you are trading with is online, orders will auto cancel in a short period of time and if the seller isn’t online that may be annoying.
  • Do not release the payment from escrow unless you have full control over the payment you receive.  That means, confirmed, in your account, not pending or anything else.
  • No matter what website, what system, what user, what country, what ANYTHING, If you cannot afford to lose money, DO NOT SEND IT.
There are many debates online whether Paxful is legit or not.  There’s also this site that gives you a breakdown of why (in the author’s opinion) the site isn’t trustworthy.
In my personal opinion Paxful is legit (I even ran the Bitcoin scam test on it). However there may be users on Paxful trying to scam you. But this is true for every other P2P marketplace out there like eBay, LocalBitcoins and OpenBazar.

So who’s the winner?

Both platforms seem to supply similar services, however LocalBitcoins has more experience and reputation in the field. In the end, it all boils down to the sellers. Whatever platform supplies you a seller that suits your needs (i.e. payment methods, exchange rate, reputation) I would use that platform. Functionality-wise they are pretty much the same, so no clear winner at the moment. Just make sure to exercise caution whenever conducting trades with strangers.

How to Buy Large Amounts of Bitcoin

As Bitcoin’s price soars near the end of 2016 many investors are looking to buy large amounts of Bitcoin. The standard methods used by most people aren’t always suitable for such purchases due to high transaction and deposit fees and limited supply of Bitcoins on the exchanges. This guide will show you the most cost effective ways to buy Bitcoins in large amounts (i.e. exceeding $100,000).

Bitcoin OTC exchanges  vs. traditional Bitcoin exchanges

The two main options you have for buying large amounts of Bitcoin are either using OTC exchanges (OTC = over the counter) or the traditional exchanges. OTC exchanges refer to companies or individual wiling to sell you Bitcoins directly and not through a regulated and automated trading platform.

OTC exchanges benefits

  • High liquidity – OTC companies specialize in supplying high volumes of Bitcoin for large buyers such as institutional investors. This means you will be able to get your order fulfilled in full faster than on a traditional exchange most of the time.
  • Fixed price – When you buy large amounts of Bitcoin on a public automated exchange you will probably see the price rise as your order is being executed. This is due to the fact that once you finish buying from the “cheap” sellers, you gradually move to the “expensive” sellers. This means you don’t have a fixed price for your purchase. When you use an OTC exchange you can negotiate a fixed price (e.g. “Bitstamp rate + 1%).

OTC exchanges disadvantages

  • Less transparency – While on a traditional exchange the order book is transparent for everyone to see, when buying Bitcoins OTC you don’t know exactly who you’re dealing with or the volume that they have to trade. You are basing your information solely on what you get from the seller.
  • Less regulation – Buying OTC means that there is less regulation involved since many of the OTC sellers aren’t listed as money transmitters hence the risk with these transactions increases.

Known Bitcoin OTC exchanges

Having listed the various pros and cons of using OTC exchanges let’s go over some of the more known OTC exchanges in the Bitcoin economy. Most of these services require for you to apply and are not open for the general public.

ItBit for institutions

ItBit is a well known Bitcoin exchange funded in 2013. It is a regulated exchange in the US that supplies Bitcoin exchange services for small and institutional investors. ItBit for institutions is the full-service financial services company for institutions trading bitcoin. The Institutional Client Group (ICG) provides institutions and active traders with personalized service and support. Itbit states that its OTC market has very competitive pricing which makes it very attractive considering it’s also a regulated exchange.

Genesis  is an institutional trading firm offering two-sided liquidity for digital currency, including bitcoin and ether. Since September 2013, Genesis has traded over 1,500,000 Bitcoin (BTC), worth over $600 million United States Dollars, and has completed over 6,000 trades.
The company has a minimum trade size of 25 Bitcoins (currently worth around $22,000). However their average trade is around 375 Bitcoins (currently worth around $300,000).
Unlike some other OTC exchanges, Genesis is regulated by FINRA and the SEC. They have also submitted their request for a Bitlicense in the state of New York. They have been covered by the press many times although not much has been heard about them during 2016.

Cumberland mining

The company offers competitive pricing for institutional size Bitcoin transactions. They supply liquidity to some of the major traditional Bitcoin exchanges as well. There’s not much info on the company’s website however Coindesk has researched it in the past and they have also partnered with Tradeblock.

Richfund – The largest Bitcoin hedge fund in the world

Richfund was founded back in early 2013 by a team of bitcoin proponents. It deals with mining operations,  market-making, automated arbitrage, and OTC trading. Richfund provides 1000-5000BTC’s large OTC services in China, Korea, Cambodia, Hongkong and Taiwan.

Traditional Bitcoin exchanges suited for large transactions

If you want to use traditional automated and regulated Bitcoin exchanges to buy large amounts of Bitcoin there are several exchanges that are suited for that purpose.

Coinbase (wallet and exchange)

Coinbase is one of the leading Bitcoin companies today. There are two options for you to buy large amounts of Bitcoins through Coinbase.
  1. Coinbase wallet – If you’re a fully verified member you can buy Bitcoins from Coinbase’s brokerage service directly up to $50,000 per day (in some states in the US you can raise the limit to $100,000 daily). Even though the price is very close to the market price Coinbase will take 1% of these transactions which is relatively expensive.
  2. GDAX (Coinbase exchange) – The exchange has a trading volume of around 4,000 Bitcoins per day.When you place an order at the market price that gets filled immediately, you are considered a taker and will pay a fee between 0.10% and 0.25%.When you place an order which is not immediately matched by an existing order, that order is placed on the order book. If another customer places an order that matches yours, you are considered the maker and your fee will be 0%. However GDAX has lower daily buying limits than the Coinbase wallet brokerage service and it will allow you to buy up to $10,000 worth of Bitcoins a day.

The oldest Bitcoin exchange around, Bitstamp currently has an average trading volume of 5,000 Bitcoins daily. Deposit fees are as low as 0.05% and depending on your trading volume you will pay a transaction fee of between 0.25%-0.1%. If you are using SEPA to transfer your money you won’t be charged any deposit fees.
(On a personal note, I use this method to buy large amounts of coins)

Founded in 2011, San Francisco-based Kraken is the largest Bitcoin exchange in Euro volume and liquidity and also trading Canadian dollars, US dollars, British pounds and Japanese yen. Kraken has similar trading volume to Bitstamp with around 5,000 Bitcoins per day traded on average.
Kraken fees are calculated on a maker-taker module similar to GDAX. The fees vary from 0%-0.26% depending if you’re the maker or the taker.

With all of the hype around it, Bitcoin is still in its infancy and the options to buy large amounts of it are limited. However, the services listed above will give you a more than fair solution for this situation. If possible and liquidity permits I suggest going with the regulated exchanges (i.e. Bitstamp, Kraken, GDAX) over the OTC exchanges

Virwox Review: Is it Legit or a Scam?

Since Virwox is currently one of the main ways people buy Bitcoin with Paypal it attracts a lot of attention. Many people consider Virwox to be a scam while others say it’s legit. In this post I would like to share my own opinion of the site after buying and selling through them for almost 4 years.

An short overview of Virwox

Virwox is a virtual currency exchange set up on late 2007 for the purpose of trading Second Life Lindens (SLL) and other virtual currencies used in online gaming.
Currencies traded other than Linden Dollars include Avination’s C$, and the Open Metaverse Currency (OMC). In April 2011, VirWoX started accepting Bitcoin and basically opened a loophole for people to buy Bitcoins with Paypal by first purchasing SLL via Paypal and then converting that SLL to Bitcoins. As of writing this post the site has over 740K registered users.

My personal experience with Virwox

I have personally bought and sold Bitcoins through Virwox in order to convert them to my Paypal account several times. At least once a month I conduct a transaction through the site for several years now. From this experience I’ve reached several conclusions:
  1. The site is legit, I never had a time when my money was stolen or withheld.
  2. The support of the site is not the best you can find – if you have an issue you’ll need to write to them a few times until you get a proper response.
Just to prove how long I’ve been working with the site here’s part of my 226 transactions I’ve conduct up until writing this post:
order history
So you can tell I have some reference. However since I run a Bitcoin blog I do know a lot of people have issues with the site so I do want to cover that aspect as well.

Online reviews of Virwox users

First of all I’ll admit – you don’t find many (or any) positive reviews about Virwox online. However the negative reviews usually are on of two options:
  1. People complaining about the high fees Virwox takes (we’ll get to this in a second)
  2. People complaining about the fact that their account was banned and they don’t understand why
I’ll address the high fees shortly. Regarding the account ban – from what I’ve read and heard through my blog readers, people who got their account banned always got their money refunded. Sometimes it can take a few days for the money to come back but I’ve never heard of someone who got his money “stolen” by the exchange.
Why does Virwox ban so many accounts? I have no idea. I can only assume that since they have a high risk of fraud by selling Bitcoins via Paypal they are more cautious than other exchanges. However this does not make them a scam.

Virwox fees and a fee calculator

Yes, Virwox takes high fees for converting Bitcoin to Paypal and vice versa. Why? Well, due to several reasons:
  1. Because of the reason I’ve mentioned before – they have a high risk of fraud and need to cover their losses with a premium.
  2. The site wasn’t built for buying Bitcoins directly with Paypal. You need to first buy SLL and then convert it to BTC. Each action on the site has an additional fee which makes the process pretty expensive at the end. If you were able to buy BTC directly it would probably be cheaper.
  3. Because they can – there’s not enough competition at the moment of sites allowing people to buy Bitcoins with Paypal so they allow themselves to request high fees. The only worthy alternative is LocalBitcoins and I think that prices there are even higher.
In order to make it easier for you to understand just how much you’re going to pay in fees I’ve created a Virwox fee calculator.This calculator is only good for Buying Bitcoins with Paypal and not for selling it or using other methods. Just enter the amount of Bitcoins you want to buy or USD you want to spend and you’ll get the matching result. This calculator takes into account ALL of the fees including: Deposit fee, converting USD to SLL, converting SLL to BTC and withdrawal fee (the full fees are detailed here).

Keep in mind that this calculator was built and updated on January 10th 2017 so it’s relevant for the fees listed at that time and they may change. As you see the fees can get pretty high and can reach over 15%.

Conclusion – Is Virwox legit?

Yes, Virwox is legit in my opinion. It may not be the best site to conduct business on due to high fees, long transaction times and their laggy support but if it’s your only option it will do. If anyone reading this has had a different experience than what I’ve just covered I’d love to hear it in the comment section below

The other two exclusive Bitcoin games—Black Ace and the Multicolor—are designed to showcase uniqueness and a fresh flavor to players. With the addition of these two exclusive games, bettors are now stripped off the possibility of getting bored with this Bitcoin casino.

  • What is Pocket Dice?

Pocket Dice is the first realistic Bitcoin dice game.
One of the main original and unique features of the game is a realistic design with lifelike dice. Pocket Dice abandoned the usual concept of Bitcoin dice games and stripped it down to the comprehensive level of a real life dice.
The idea of realistic design made the initial rules easier as well. User just have to choose his bet, over or under the one of the numbers a person can get by throwing two dice, then choose his bet  amount and throw the dice.

  • Rules

The rules are as simple as they are in any other bitcoin dice game. Except, pocketdice use the mechanics of real dice, instead of playing with random decimal between 0 and 100.
The point is to predict the outcome of the dice roll. Not precisely, but on "over" or "under" conditions. You have to choose the number and predict if the next roll will be under or over that number. If your prediction is correct, you are the winner and will receive the winning according to payout table.
By the way, you can choose your bet conditions depending on payout using the payout table. To see the payout table and choose your bet conditions from there, just click on the number that you're betting on.
If you'll win, you'll have an option to double your winnings. You may read about it in the "Risk game" article.

  • Risk game

Risk game is an optional extra rolls round in case you win. It provides you a 50\50 chance to multiply your win. And the most awesome part of it is that you can multiply it to. You can "risk" as many times as you win.
So the point is to win in the main game and then press the red "Risk" button. You will be taken then to the risk game screen, where you'll have to choose three out of six possible outcomes of a throw. Three out of six dice on the left side of the screen. Those are the numbers you're betting your main-roll win on. The throw is done with a single die. If the outcome of a throw matches one of three chosen dice on the left, you are a winner.
In case you win, the payout of the your main roll will be increased and you'll be able to risk-roll again or collect your winnings. If you lose, you'll be automatically taken to the main game screen.

  • Autoplay

Autoplay is a game mode that helps you place automated bets in Pocket Dice. You may either place a number of identical bets or try to create a strategy.
The bet amount may be increased in case of your win or loss, or in both cases at the same time.
Also you can either set a limited number of rolls, or leave the 'Number of rolls' field blank for unlimited rolls.
If you don't set a limit, the game will continue until you press the stop button or your session is ended.

  • How to create a new account?

In order to create a new account, all you have to do is to:
1) Choose a username.
2) Choose your password.
Since it's all about your money and security, i suggest you to pick a strong password. This is why this field is restricted to a minimum of six characters and requires at least one letter and at least one number;
(In order to keep your security even tighter you can turn on the two step verification later)
3) Enter your email. You'll need it to reset your password or in order to withdraw your winnings. Enter it carefully, though. Once you enter it, you won't be able to change it.
If you have a Facebook account, you can simply press "Sign up with Facebook" button and all the info will be filled automatically.
Keep in mind, though, to get the ability to sign in without Facebook, you'll need to set your password first. See "Reset your password" for details.

  • Free Bitcoins

Whenever your balance gets lower than the amount of minimum bet, you may claim free bitcoins from our faucet. By default pocketdice  offer 1000 satoshi per claim once per hour. For depositing users the faucet is quicker – they may claim 1000 satoshi once per 10 minutes. Frequent players also have a chance to speed up their faucet once per day with Daily Rewards Bonus. Unused faucet funds will be forfeited from your balance once per week.

  • Deposit

In order to make a deposit you need to:
1) Sign in to pocketdice.io;
2) Click on your balance in the top right corner of the screen;
3) You'll get your own personal deposit address and several options, to either copy it to your clipboard (requires Flash) or to send it to your email. You can also manually copy or rewrite it yourself;
4) Send the desired amount of BTCs to this address using your bitcoin wallet;
5) As soon as your deposit receives one confirmation, you'll get a success message on screen and your balance will be updated.
NOTE: This process is usually almost instant, but it could take a lot more time, depending on bitcoin-network load.

  • Withdrawal

Withdrawal is almost as easy as the deposit. With few restrictions and extra actions for security reasons.
In order to withdraw you need to:
1) Go to the corresponding menu section "Withdraw";
2) Fill out the address and the amount fields;
3) Doublecheck your email address. You'll need it to finish the process;
4) Press the "Send" button. If everything was done correctly, you'll see the success message that will ask you to confirm the transaction via email;
5) Check your email inbox for confirmation email and press the link or button to confirm the withdrawal.
After that, consider your withdrawal on its way. The time needed for this withdrawal to reach your wallet depends solely on bitcoin network and you can monitor your transaction status by pressing "info" button near the corresponding withdrawal in "withdrawal history" tab.
Note: Withdrawals will only be sent once your initial deposit has reached at least one confirmation. Your withdrawal will also have 0.2 mBTC subtracted to cover the transaction fee.
Minimum withdrawal amount is 0.5 mBTC.
